Magnetic Angle Sensor
MAS-5

The MAS-5 is a rotating shaft angular position sensor that has the advantage of being "non-contact" yet has the ability to detect angular position with extreme accuracy. It does this by sensing the polar orientation of a magnet attached to the end of the moving shaft. Since there is no contact there is no wear or degradation of the signal over time. The MAS-5 will last indefinitely!

An example of the many applications of the MAS-5 is in automatic centering control of compensator or "dancer" arm shaft position in yarn or web take-ups. In addition to the position sensor the MAS-5 also contains circuits which provides proportional, integral and derivative (PID) influence to its 0-10VDC output signal so that it may be used directly as the speed reference input to any kind of motor drive capable of powering the motor linked to the take-up spindle. The PID performs averaging and compensating action to the sensed arm movement to accomplish smooth motor operation and arm position centering in spite of varying process speed, decreasing spindle RPM as package builds and a degree of motor / drive response lag.

The MAS-5 also provides an external, operator-accessible adjustment for maximum motor speed that is typically used as a "preset speed" control for yarn winder applications where the yarn is already in motion when it is presented to the moving spindle for string-up. The MAS-5 may also be used in applications where the yarn is not in motion at string-up but instead accelerates from a stall to process speed with the spindle taking up as needed to prevent slack.

When the ENABLE INPUT is activated the MAS-5 immediately checks the position of the compensator arm. If it is below normal running position it decides that this is to be a "preset start" for a "string up on the fly" application. In this case, the output reference quickly rises to the maximum voltage as set by the PRESET POT. String up may now occur and when the yarn grips the spindle the compensator arm rises. This position change quickly synchronizes the spindle speed to the yarn delivery (process) speed. Winding proceeds with the motor speed regulated so the arm remains in its normal running position. This assures uniform yarn tension throughout the wind.

If, when the ENABLE INPUT is activated, the arm is above the normal running position then the MAS-5 decides this is to be a "demand start" for an "accelerate from a stall" application where the yarn is already wrapped around the spindle and wound tight pulling the arm high. The output reference remains low until the arm lowers in response to the start of the yarn delivery. When this occurs the output reference rises at the correct rate to accelerate the spindle motor in step with the yarn delivery rate so no slack occurs.

With the above capabilities the MAS-5 is suitable for any yarn or web winder application.
